About us

We represent 27 small islands scattered across 17 municipalities and 4 regions in Denmark. The 27 islands' combined population is 5,100 inhabitants, with individual island populations ranging from 20 to 1,200 dwellers.

We work with volunteers, organisations, and players at local, municipal and regional levels. Our goal is to help preserve and develop small islands as vibrant, year-round communities that appeal to both current and future island dwellers.

Between 2000 and 2006, the Danish Small Islands participated in the EU's Leader+ programme.

In 2007, the Small Islands Local Action Group was formed to continue this work, and we continue to work in close cooperation with the Association of Danish Small Islands.

Tasks

We assess and nominate applications for project funding by the Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Fisheries Fund, both EU programmes running from 2007 to 2013.

We also take the initiative on certain projects, activities and processes.

In Denmark, final approval of project funding is made by the Danish Food Industry Agency, a directorate within the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries.

We are one of 56 Local Actions Groups in Denmark.

Our development strategy

Our development strategy is built upon the existing strengths of the small islands themselves. Highlighting valuable trends and tendencies, the strategy also elaborates upon our focus areas and our vision.

Our vision

Sustainable island communities, built upon diversity, cooperation and involvement, where progress and development spring from the small islands' values and traditions.
